Skill Enhancement and Employee Development (S.E.E.D.) program provides individuals with autism and other learning differences the opportunity to earn a certificate through the School of Continuing Education. Through in-person instruction, group coaching, and employment experiences designed to enhance employability skills, individuals are prepared for independent, competitive employment in the community. Job placement is not provided by the program, but referrals to campus and community resources for assistance with job placement are available.

This program may be right for you if:

  • You have a formal, diagnosed learning difference such as autism, ADHD, OCD, or a learning disability, or have self-identified as learning differently
  • You have completed programming at the high school level, including transition programs
  • You can--and have--completed class work and/or employment experiences independently without the use of a 1:1 aide, job coaches, or teaching assistants
  • You could benefit from a short-term certificate that includes self-pacing, team teaching, small class size, group coaching, and a work-based learning experience
  • You have enrolled or are planning to enroll in a college degree or certificate program OR you are seeking employment

Individuals will participate in weekly group coaching sessions to foster growth and development around employment-related topics. The format of group coaching encourages peer learning through shared experiences, while creating a community-like experience in the classroom.

Students will have time during instruction to start assignments. Students will have work to complete outside of instruction. To progress through the program, students must demonstrate mastery of each subject area. Students will be allowed to submit their assignments in a format they choose.

After showing mastery of topics, students will complete a 175-hour internship experience to apply the skills they have developed. The internship could consist of on-campus and community experiences. Job coaches are not provided at internship sites, but students meet with the S.E.E.D. Program staff to address job supports and concerns.

Instruction starts in August and January. The program may be completed within a semester. Deadline to apply is July 15th for the August start and November 30th for the January start.

Financial aid cannot be used to cover the tuition for the S.E.E.D. program as it is not a credit-bearing program. For information on cost, please contact Dominique Dial, Director of CAAS, at dominiquedial@triton.edu.


Program Overview

Part 1: Attend in-person instruction and coaching. Class instruction will occur once a week for 3 hours on Mondays. Students will meet with Career Services staff 3 times during instruction, and the appointments must be outside of class time. 

Part 2: Engage in a 175-hour (15-20 hours/week) internship experience. Students may complete their experience using on-campus and community sites. All students will develop a work schedule with the employer partner based on the employer’s and student’s mutually available hours. Students must submit a time sheet at the end of each internship experience signed by their supervisor to document hours completed. Students will start their internships during week 4 of instruction in order to complete all hours by the end of the semester.

Upon successful completion of all required parts, students will receive the S.E.E.D. Certificate through the Center for Access and Accommodative Services (CAAS) and the School of Continuing Education. A graduation ceremony is held in May after program completion to award the students their certificates.

S.E.E.D. Application

Please complete the application below if you are interested in applying for the S.E.E.D. program. Deadline to apply is July 15th for the August start and November 30th for the January start.

SEED Program Application

Once program staff receive a completed program application, the individual will be contacted to schedule an eligibility meeting with program staff. As part of the meeting, the student will complete the following tasks:

  • 45-minute interview with program staff
  • Career Assessment
  • Placement Test to identify current reading and math skills

After the eligibility meeting, program staff will meet and review the applicant to ensure the individual is a good fit for the program. Applicants who are approved for the program will be sent information on how to enroll in the program and next steps.


FAQs

No. Students who identify as neurodivergent are eligible to enroll. Accommodations are encouraged if students qualify for them, but are not a requirement for program acceptance.

Yes. Students can be enrolled in the S.E.E.D. program and other courses at the same time.

The S.E.E.D. program does not utilize job coaches or teaching assistance. Students must be able to complete class work and employment experiences independently. S.E.E.D. program staff will maintain contact with the student and internship supervisors to address any concerns that may arise.

Students are expected to attend all scheduled class sessions and their internships as scheduled. If a student is absent due to illness or emergency, the student must contact S.E.E.D. program staff and their work supervisor staff prior to the absence. If a student knows they will miss multiple sessions at the time of enrollment, they may need to enroll in a future offering.

The first step is for the student submit the online application. S.E.E.D. program staff will contact the student to schedule an intake meeting which will last approximately 2 hours. At the intake meeting, the student will complete a brief interview with program staff, a career assessment, a work skills inventory, and the Triton College placement exam. Program staff will review information gathered during the intake. Individuals will be notified if approved on how to register for the program. All requirements must be met prior to the first day of instruction.

Students will have homework in this program. There will be work assigned in class that the student needs to complete at home. Periodically students will have to schedule a meeting with S.E.E.D. program staff or other departments on campus, such as Career Services, to complete assignments. Students will be notified of these requirements as they will be outlined in the syllabus and announced on the course Blackboard page. Schedule changes will be provided with as much notice as possible. Students will need to check their Triton email and the program Blackboard page regularly for any changes to the schedule or assignments.

S.E.E.D. partners with local employers and campus departments to offer students skill development across diverse roles and sectors, including employee training, healthcare, horticulture, hospitality, libraries, marketing and graphic design, municipal government, nonprofit management, parks and recreation, retail, shipping and receiving, and more.

Employers value the program for supporting dedicated students with unique talents, while workplace colleagues benefit from collaborating with neurodivergent individuals.

Employer FAQs

The S.E.E.D. Program Community Work Experience Partner Agreement outlines the responsibilities for the employer and Triton College. This agreement also details the responsibilities of an employer partner. 

While there is no requirement that S.E.E.D. intern(s) are paid, an employer can do so if they wish, or if it is part of your company’s policy. 

S.E.E.D. program staff understand that there are various factors that could impact an employer hosing a S.E.E.D. intern. If the employer is unable to provide an opportunity, the S.E.E.D. Coordinator should be notified.

Triton College does not provide any job coaching or on-site supervision.  S.E.E.D. interns and employers are provided support as needed to assist with the S.E.E.D. intern being successful. This support comes in the form of availability for requested meetings and phone calls to answer questions, and express concerns. The S.E.E.D. Coordinator will conduct check-ins with the S.E.E.D. intern and occasional drop-ins to the work site.  Employers are encouraged to contact the S.E.E.D. Coordinator immediately with any concerns or issues.  

Triton College or the Employer Partner may terminate their agreement by providing written notice signed by the authorized agent. In the event of termination, every effort shall be made to allow participating students to complete their work assignment.

While no formal employer training is offered at this time, the S.E.E.D. Coordinator is available to work with employers and their staff to answer any questions they may have about working with S.E.E.D.  participants, including training and educational resources for working with neurodivergent individuals.
