About The Scholars Program

Renee Cuevas"Dr. Flaherty proved to be an understanding, challenging and genuine professor and advisor. Dr. Flaherty was my professor for both the Scholars seminar, as well as his beloved Shakespeare class. He always goes beyond the classroom. His unconditional support and determination to help his students succeed after their time at Triton College allowed me to prepare to transfer to a four-year university. As a first-generation undocumented Latina, Dr. Flaherty challenged me to dream.”

“I had a fantastic time in the Scholars Program. I am very grateful for my experience. I was able to go to school without having to pay for it, which was huge for me. I enjoyed the small class sizes in the Scholars Program. I got to know the professors because of that and my peers in the classes, as well.”

Patrick Rugamba“The Triton College Scholars Program was the best thing to ever happen to me! I was taught by dedicated Scholars Program instructors and I made friends with other academically focused and goal-oriented Scholars Program students, which all propelled me in my academics.”

“The reason I keep directing the program is because of the continued student successes. It is so rewarding. The transformation our students go through – from day one with students often not quite sure what they’ve gotten themselves into to the transformation that happens over their two years here, and what they have been able to accomplish – is amazing to see. All students in the program want to succeed and have strong goals. We help students achieve their goals, whatever those goals might be. And we provide a caring, friendly environment for students. There is a strong sense of community here.”

Service-learning partners include agencies in the areas of social service, culture and history, library service, animal care, health service, and literacy service. The program invites any interested not-for-profit agencies within the service district of Triton College to contact the program for information about becoming a service-learning partner.

Purpose and Goals of Service Learning
The service-learning mission is threefold. Service learning provides volunteer opportunities to Triton College Scholars Students who will share their talents, skills, interest and expertise. In addition, service learners will assist nonprofit and health care agencies in recruitment of students for their special activities and/or daily tasks. Lastly, Scholars Program service learners (SSL) will document and report the value and impact of service learning student work to interested parties.
